Extra Space Storage is going to be adding approximately 120 new units to its Jefferson County facility after finalizing a deal to purchase new land from a nearby church.

Waterstone Community Church, 5890 S. Alkire St., will sell just over an acre to Extra Space Storage after the Jefferson County Commissioners approved a rezoning to allow warehouses and mini warehouses on the site. The purchase was contingent on the rezoning approval.

Extra Space Storage opened in February 2013 at 5891 S. Youngfield Court but has already reached 80 percent capacity, leading owners to look for additional space.

Lisa Glynn with TRC Cos. represents Extra Space Storage and said the facility approached the church about obtaining some land.

“It was a win-win for both of us,” Glynn said.

The land in question directly borders the Extra Storage Space facility and is also near the Waterstone Community Orchard, south of the church. Executive pastor of operations Brad Heykoop said the land really wasn’t big enough for the church to do anything with it.

“It’s functional only to them,” he said.

Extra Space will close on the land in October and construction should begin in early 2015.

Community interest was low in the rezoning request and no one opposed the rezoning.

“There wasn’t much citizen involvement,” Jefferson County planner Analiese Hock said.

Jefferson County Commissioner Don Rosier said he is glad to see local businesses being able to expand and said this area, which borders West Bowles Avenue east of C-470, was booming in the early 2000s, but really slowed down when the economy began to suffer.

“It’s good to see more businesses building and looking into the community,” he said. “This is an interesting idea. It’s a good way to capitalize other uses.”
