Freedom Sisters REBOOT Workshop

Ford has announced that it is teaming with National Veterans Transition Services, Inc. to create a three-week workshop that will focus entirely on helping female veterans adjust to civilian life.

Running from March 9th to 27th on the campus of National University, the Freedom Sisters REBOOT Workshop will allow up to 25 woman veterans attend free classes that will cover such topics as employment and career options, goal-orientation, and taking care of oneself in everyday life. To further assist these vets in acclimating to a life after olive drab, personal makeover sessions are also available.

“We designed this program to meet the unique needs of women, and the training builds upon the participants’ military training, skills and experience,” said Maurice Wilson, co-founder, REBOOT Workshop and retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer. “The workshop addresses the professional, social and personal aspects of life, along with connections to community resources that could also be of help.”

According to the Disabled American Veterans report from September of last year, the nearly 300,000 female veterans returning to life as a United States citizen have a more difficult time adjusting than their male counterparts. When the two groups are compared, female vets are more likely to be homeless, more likely to be single parents, and less likely to have proper medical coverage.

It is expected that these issues will only increase as the number of women veterans continue to increase between now and 2020.

“These brave women have served and sacrificed to defend our freedom, and yet there are few programs that address their unique needs as they return to the home front and to their families,” said Pamela Alexander, director of Community Development, Ford Motor Company Fund. “It’s another opportunity to say thank you, while also helping them make a successful transition.”
