Liquid photopurification company SurePure said that trials using its patented photopurification system to microbiologically purify potato rinse water had proven successful.
According to SurePure, potato processing plants are amongst the most water-intensive in the world. Rinse water has proven particularly difficult to clean microbiologically because its heavy starch load makes it impossible to use traditional thermal pasteurization techniques.
In order to rinse potato products thoroughly, large amounts of clean water have to be used and then dumped, which is both costly and environmentally unsound. Rinse water also can carry microbiological loads. Salmonella, ecoli and other pathogens are also often present as a result of soil or fertilizer residues.
SurePure systems use UV-C light to purify microbiologically sensitive liquids such as wine, fruit juice and milk. Although designed to deliver food-grade solutions, it can also be harnessed to improve processing liquids such as water, brines and sugar syrup solutions, the company said.
