Ask someone to name the best restaurant in London and they’ll probably start with the Michelin-starred eateries like Le Gavroche, Hibiscus, The Square. They might even chuck in the odd effort from Gordon Ramsay or Jamie bleeding Oliver.

But, according to TripAdvisor users, the best bite in the capital comes courtesy of family-run Eritrean-Italian café and restaurant, the Blue Nile Cafe, in Woolwich.

This week, it was ranked number one in London by reviewers on TripAdvisor, ahead of Oliver’s Barbecoa and the Michelin-starred Pied a Terre.

Not bad for a place where all the meals are less than £20.

In its previous guise as the Salad Bowl, the restaurant was almost forced to close last year. But, owner Shewa Haggos has turned its fortunes round by serving a mix of Italian and Eritrean classics.

There’s Italian coffees, pasta and ice-creams, warm ‘ful’, Eritrean meat stews infused with cardamom and cinnamon and cooked in ‘tesmi’, a warm and comforting spiced butter, plus delicious home made sweet cardamom flavoured bread called ‘himbasha’ and ‘injera’, large flat gluten-free pancakes.

That just sounds like a warm hug from within doesn’t it?
