Starz is setting sail for more Black Sails in 2016.
Three months ahead of its sophomore return, the premium cable network has renewed Black Sails for a third season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The pirate drama hails from executive producer Michael Bay and creators Jonathan Steinberg (Jericho) and Robert Levine (Touch). During its freshman run, the Toby Stephens-starrer averaged a solid 5.3 million total viewers.

“The incredible world that Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine have created continues to unfold in season two,” Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik said. “Flint’s journey is riveting, and around him, Jon and Robert have woven an intricate web of conflict, betrayal, and redemption for the other characters that we believe will keep fans of the show coming back for more. We think that season three will bring even more of the drama and lore that has made it a hit both in the U.S. and internationally.”
This marks the second early renewal for the series, from Bay’s Platinum Dunes banner and counts Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. As it has been prone to do, Starz renewed Black Sails five months before its series debut for a second round.
Season two returns Jan. 24 at 9 p.m. on Starz.
Black Sails joins a roster of original scripted fare at Starz including recently renewed comedy Survivor’s Remorse, dramas Da Vinci’s Demons, Power, Outlander, The One Percent and Flesh and Bone, among other co-productions and acquired programming.
Black Sails joins the second season of TNT’s The Last Ship and cocaine drama pilot in the works at the Turner-owned network.
