A U.S. military plane departed for Nepal on Sunday transporting personnel and gear to assist in the wake of a 7.9-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 2,000.

A military transport plane left Dover Air Force Base in Delaware at about 11:00 Sunday morning bound for Nepal, Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said in a statement.

“The aircraft is transporting nearly 70 personnel, including a USAID Disaster Assistance Response Team, the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue team and several journalists along with 45 square tons of cargo,” he said in the statement. “The flight is expected to arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport on April 27.”

The initial cost for the Defense Department support is $700,000, a defense official said. There are currently no other requests for U.S. aide.
