Fire damages Johnston steel yard

JOHNSTON, R.I. — One person was injured following a fire at a Johnston metal recycling plant.

Crews were called to Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. on Celia Street at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters kept the flames to a minimum, but a thick plume of smoke remained in the air for most of the evening.

Residents who live nearby the plant on King Street said they believe the fumes might have been hazardous and want the company held accountable.

Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. is based in Portland, Ore., and has plants across the U.S. and Canada.
