THE devastated family of a Scots dad shot dead in Brazil travelled to Sao Paulo for his funeral yesterday.

Jason Stevens, 38, was killed after trying to negotiate with a gunman during a robbery at a bar where he was playing snooker.

The translator was blasted in the stomach, leg and arms on Wednesday night.

The dad of one, whose family are originally from Edinburgh, died on the way to hospital.

Jason’s dad Richard has an OBE and is a former mining company chairman.

Jason grew up in Sao Paulo and has 12-year-old daughter Isabella with former partner Anna.

His dad, mum Lynne, brother Mark and sister Nina are believed to have attended the funeral along with relatives who travelled from the UK.

Jason’s cousin Marryat, a businessman from Surrey, said: “The family are obviously devastated.

“Jason was just a really lively and friendly and outgoing man and a fantastic father and he will be very sadly missed by everyone.

“He was born over in Sao Paulo but still maintained links to Scotland as he has extended family there.

“Stepping in and trying to resolve a situation was exactly the kind of thing Jason would do and it is just a tragic fact that he has got involved in this situation.

“A few of the family have flown over to Brazil and most of his immediate family are there already. Funerals in Brazil
generally take place within 24 hours – that is why things moved on so quickly.”

Local police said two men burst into the bar in upmarket Interlagos at around 11pm on Wednesday.

The gunman is said to have stood lookout by the door while his accomplice went round the bar collecting customers’ wallets and bags.

One report suggested Jason was shot as he tried to calm the robber who got agitated because some people were refusing to hand over belongings.

The two gunmen fled in a black Ford Fiesta driven by a getaway driver.

Bar owner Fumihiro Yoshima said he believed the gunman may have panicked when 6ft 2inch Jason spoke up.

He said: “I think the robber shot him because he felt scared at how tall and strong he was.”
