The restoration of Pontypridd’s famous lido at Ynysangharad Park is on track to be finished by this summer – and we can reveal an exclusive artist’s impression of what it will look like.

Rhondda Cynon Taf council says its contractors have made significant progress over the winter months on the £6.3m project, which plans to transform the historic lido into a state-of-the-art facility.

And we can reveal this never-seen-before artist’s impression of the lido, the most recent to be released, as the drawing looks down on a stadium-like structure next to a new proposed play area.

Three heated outdoor pools

The new lido will include three heated outdoor pools, heated changing facilities, a café, viewing gallery and visitor interpretation space permanently depicting the history of the lido.

Councillor Ann Crimmings, cabinet member for environment, leisure and sport, assured that work is progressing behind the site’s hoardings at Ynysangharad Park, and says she is impressed by the progress.

She added: “I never fail to be impressed by the scale and complexity of this historic scheme, whenever I visit the site.

“All the work is currently being carried out behind hoarding boards as it is still a construction site, but the public will, I am sure, be impressed when they see the finished product this summer.

'An ambitious and high-quality visitor attraction'

“This is an exciting project and one that is eagerly-anticipated by both the public and all involved in the building of Lido Ponty following many years of planning.

“Lido Ponty is an ambitious and high-quality visitor attraction which I am sure will not only boost the economy of Pontypridd but will continue to raise the profile of a town and county borough which is already steeped in history and heritage.”

As a part of the project’s progress, the new roof tiles at the new lido buildings have been supplied by the same French company that provided the original tiles some 90 years ago.

Meanwhile, original doors and windows have also been taken away and carefully refurbished to their former glory by Blackwood-based Taliesin Conservation – and are being reinstalled into the original buildings.

Closed in 1991, the lido is scheduled to reopen this summer.
