Nvidia disclosed its high-end graphic processor, plus its other plans with Android platform and self-drive cars prior to the event proper at Computex 2015. The chipmaker announced yesterday its recent high-end graphic process GeForce GTX 980 Ti, prior to the main event.
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang talked to media about lots of announcements, such as, G-Sync, GeForce GTX 980 Ti and their other upcoming products like Shield Android TV and self-drive car OS Drive PX. GeForce GTX 980 Ti is the follow-up of GTX Titan X, costing $649, while Titan X is tagged $1,000.
GeForce GTX 980 Ti uses GM200 or Maxwell GPU, meaning, fast performance, but is “quiet and cool” with no need of liquid cooling. It is specifically made for 4k games and has comprehensive support for DirectX12 API just in time when Windows 10 will be out this summer. Game developers and researchers are Titan X’s targets, with its 12GB memory.
According to PC Gamer, graphics card Titan X is equivalent to a Ferrari. It is the dream of every gamer to own Titan X but not all can have the extravagance. Furthermore, the actual need for it is unclear, or if it matches the hardware being used, or vice versa.
GTX 980 Ti has more audience, and it will deliver better experiences for virtual reality headsets, such as Oculus Rift and its Multi-Resolution shading feature. Virtual reality will invade the world of gaming and Nvidia is set to take part. VR screens differ from the standard screen rendering since their lenses require twisted images to match the optical screen.
Huang said that there are about 100 to 200 million gamers using GeForce all over the world. Older versions GeForce GTX 680 and GTX 780/780 Ti are used by many, and that they need upgrades. GTX 980 is three times better in performance than GTX 680.
The chip firm also discussed their focus on games with Android OS. It has no longer worked for smartphones and modem, with Hwang saying “phones are largely done.” Huang said smartphones are becoming a commodity with a lot of big players, while Android is wider, open and is an Internet platform with billions of users.
The most recent Google I/O last week had the launch of Nvidia’s Shield Android TV. It is based on Tegra X1 processor, has 16GB ($200) or 500GB ($300) drives. It doubles as a streaming device, capable of 4K videos, as well as a game console that allows playing downloaded games or stream games through Nvidia GRID service.
Nvidia disclosed the new processor GTX 680 and its other plans at Computex 2015. It said Drive PX module for self-driving cars, is in the works. It has on board two Tegra X1 chipset for 2.3 teraflops of processing, and a 12 camera inputs for a deep-learning system which recognizes objects, vehicles, as well ase lanes.
Car firms, developers and researchers are now checking on Drive PX. The other one is Drive CX, an automotive OS for digital cockpits and infotainment systems.
Nvidia is also working on G-Sync, the company’s program to enhance game experiences with a smoother frame delivery. Part of the hearsays is that mobile G-sync can be enabled with a mere driver update. Nvidia will bring G-sync to laptops with compatible panels. Panel compatibility is a requirement since G-sync mobile relies on the standards of embedded DisplayPort which has variable refresh timings.
While G-Sync is only for full screen, it is heard to be coming to windowed screens as well. Windowed G-Sync will be working in two-way Scalable Link Interface configurations though it can be turned on and off per application if games do not appear good with it. Nvidia loaded yesterday’s event with much information by disclosing its new processor and other plans at Computex 2015. The ICT trade show opens today at Taipei World Center, Taiwan.
