Ernesto Ruscio/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — When Eva Mendes told Extra that sweatpants were the “number one cause of divorce in America,” she set off a firestorm. Now the actress is backtracking on her statement, saying it was merely a joke.
On Instagram, she posted a photo of grey sweatpants, with the caption: “Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you’re the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce. Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs.”
Even Mendes’ longtime boyfriend Ryan Gosling came to her defense. “Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That’s right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter,” he tweeted.
The Hollywood couple began dating in 2011 and welcomed daughter Esmeralda in September.
Mendes may even enjoy the comfort that sweatpants brings to her changing figure. She told daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that she’s in no rush to slim down after giving birth to her first child. “You know, the whole bounce-back thing. I’m like ‘Oh gosh, ease up! It’s OK,” she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last December.
