Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) have provided updates on Internet.org and Project Loon at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. This year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which typically revolves around the newest gadgets and services targeted for the world’s richest countries, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) have spent much of their stage time focusing on the other side of the market. Both companies have a plan to increase the number of users for their services by delivering or lowering the cost of internet access for billions of people who are offline.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Products, told new details about Project Loon which is Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s plan to provide wireless connectivity via hot-air balloons.

“Each helium-filled balloon will carry a solar-powered LTE antenna and is designed to hover at the edge of the atmosphere, beaming down wireless signals. The balloons are each designed to provide Internet access to an area about the size of Rhode Island, so with enough of them working in tandem, the company will be able to eliminate the need for costly cell towers in the developing world,” Pichai said.

At the conference, Pichai also talked about the drone planes Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is building to supplement wireless coverage of the balloons. According to him, Titan Aerospace, a maker of solar-powered, high-altitude drones that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) acquired last year, will begin testing its wireless-providing aircraft in the next few months. The purpose of these drones will be to provide internet access in disaster areas to aid rescue operations, or to merely increase capacity in those areas where there’s a high demand for internet. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is not alone in experimenting with internet providing drones and satellites as Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is also doing the same but focusing more on the ground.

“Facebook’s primary attempt to expand online access is Internet.org, an initiative to establish basic standards for Internet service around the world,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO.

According to Zuckerberg, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s main attempt to increase online access is Internet.org, which is an initiative to establish basic standards for internet service throughout the world which means that Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) will package and give away a set of apps such as Wikipedia, health research tools and Facebook itself, that consume low bandwidth, to regional carriers for use on the phones they sell.

By helping to introduce new and affordable ways to provide internet service in developing countries, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) will have more chances of getting early loyalty from people who will be using the internet for the first time. Both of the companies are determined in their joint cause of expanding web access which could help them to increase their customer base and widen their business horizons. As Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s search engine is one of the basic services of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s Internet.org, Pichai seemed excited about Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), whereas Zuckerberg also showed positive signs of working with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) again in future.
