Toyota launches all-new Hilux pickup

Toyota Motor Company has revealed the all-new Hilux pickup in Thailand, promising a new level of toughness as well as refinement. The eight-generation Hilux features a new diesel engine paired to a six-speed automatic

Toyota’s objective for the new Hilux is to “redefine tough.” By now everyone knows that the Hilux is one of the most indestructible machines on the planet, as users from the UN to various armed militias have proven. For this pickup, Toyota didn’t just focus on ruggedness and off-road capability. The company reportedly also gave improtance to reducing stress in traffic, where most of the vehicles are being used. The truck has been designed to be easier to drive and to be comfortable to all occupants. Toyota promises a quieter cabin, more comfortable ride, and better fuel efficiency for longer range.

Hiroki Nakajima, Hilux chief engineer, says, “Our entire development concept was centered on ‘redefining toughness’. We aimed to make the new Hilux ‘tougher’ based on a much broader interpretation of that word. The message we want to deliver to our customers is embodied in our slogan for the vehicle: ‘A New Era for Pickup. Every Inch a Hilux.'”

That being said, the Hilux has also been through punishing development testing. This ranged from hot weather testing in 50 degree-Celcius deserts, flooded roads, and muddy forests.

Hilux features a new frame with enlarged side rail cross section. The stiffer frame is essential for better ride comfort. Upgraded leaf spring suspension and shock absorbers enhance off-road performance and comfort. The Hilux will feature different suspension settings for different markets: standard (for “all road conditions the world over”), heavy duty, and comfort. Comfort is for driving on paved roads. The model for the Thailand market, and presumably for the rest of ASEAN, will get the comfort specification.

The new standard engine is a 2.8-liter diesel with 177ps and 450Nm. Horsepower is up slightly from the current 3.0-liter engine, and more importantly, torque is up by 25 percent. Toyota promises excellent torque from low speed, better fuel efficiency and reduced engine noise. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic to enhance efficiency and drivability compared to the current antiquated four-speed auto. The new engine is reportedly easier to service as well.

The new Hilux features some elements from Toyota’s worldwide truck lineup, including the beady headlamps and chromed grille. The headlights are now LED units.

Size has grown to 5335mm x 1855mm width, from the current5135mm x 1760mm. Wheelbase remains unchanged at 3085mm. Tire size has grown as well to 265/65R18.

The interior features a much improved instrument panel with a more modern layout, with more-upscale metallic trim. The cabin will use “luxury seats” with available leather trim. The audio system will have a touchscreen.

The Hilux has been in Toyota’s lineup since 1968, and over seven generations, has sold more than 16 million units in 180 countries. The Hilux’s significance extends beyond the pickup market, as it points the way to the upcoming all-new Innova and Fortuner. The outgoing trio of Hilux, Innova, and Fortuner are still at the top of the sales charts even as they reach the end of their very extended model cycle. The new design and technology, if it delivers as promised, will gain a lot of satisfied customers, and make life very difficult once again for the competition.
