Andhra Pradesh firecracker unit explosion: Toll eighteen, two bodies go missing

Owner in hospital, case booked against him
KAKINADA: The death toll in the fire-cracker explosion at Vakatippa village of U. Kothapalli mandal touched 18 on Tuesday. While four persons U. Kamaraju, 38, Tutta Nagamani, 25, Dammu Guraiah, 45, and 18-year-old Medisetty Nooka Ratnam died while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital, the villagers found the body of Vasamsetty Raghava about 300 metres from blast spot.
It is believed the explosion had flung the body. The police and the villagers are still searching for the bodies of Draksharapu Chinathalli and Undrajapu Keerthi.
Meanwhile, the East Godavari police on Tuesday booked a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the owner of Manikanta Fireworks, under the Explosive Substance Act, and is likely to arrest him.
According East Godavari superintendent of police M. Ravi Prakash, the case was booked with U. Kothapalli police station under Section 9G(1, A) of the Explosive Substance Act.
The Section states that if the manufactures violate the conditions of the licence granted, they are punishable with an imprisonment that may extend up to three years or fine of Rs 5,000 or both.
U. Kothapalli sub-inspector N. Kondaiah said, “Koppisetty Appa Rao, the owner, himself suffered burn injuries in the leg and is in the hospital.” Mr Kondaiah said that Mr Appa Rao and the other victims were not able to say what caused the explosion.
Mr Appa Rao had applied for renewal of his fire-cracker licence, which had expired in March, 2014. However, he could not submit the original of the expired licence.
Student dies while making firecrackers:
A final-year MBA student died on the spot and five others received serious injuries after an explosion took place while they were making firecrackers here on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Jogi Kirankumar, 23. Every year, his family members get together to make the crackers

On Tuesday, when all of them were making firecrackers, an explosion took place. Kirankumar died on the spot. His sisters Tulasi and Nagalakshmi, the house owner’s daughter Nagabhanu, and Kirankumar’s friend Chanakya were also injured and were rushed to the government general hospital. Tulasi’s condition is said to be critical. The building was also damaged.
