Novozymes A/S, the world’s largest maker of enzymes, said its alliance with Monsanto Co. to develop new crop traits is “marginally” ahead of its research schedule and may lead to joint acquisitions.

The two companies have got their teams to work together faster than expected and if any gaps in expertise and coverage arise, the allies could jointly undertake purchases, Chief Executive Peder Nielsen said in a phone interview today, adding that there are currently no such plans. Monsanto alone would add distribution assets if needed, while Novozymes could acquire biotechnology, he said.
