Licenses of the IT sector are now being processed at broadband speed, thanks to a unique initiative of the Telangana Labour Department.

In the last one month, over 150 renewals and 30 new licenses were issued to the IT industry. The fast-tracking of the process can be attributed to the Labour Department appointing a nodal officer exclusively for the industry in January this year, following a request from industry representatives.

“This initiative is the first in the country and is working out really well,” said S. Naresh Kumar, the nodal officer for the IT industry and Deputy Labour Commissioner (Ranga Reddy). “Twice a week, we attend to work related to the IT industry which might increase later. Some license applications, which were pending for years, were cleared in the last few weeks. We plan to introduce drop box system soon for applications so that companies can save on time.”

The IT companies have also been appreciative of the department’s initiatives. In fact, Cognizant Technology Solutions acknowledged the work by writing a letter of appreciation to the department for the speedy clearances.

President of IT-FAN (IT Facility and Admin Managers Network) Naresh Yadav said they hoped more such steps would materialise.

“Applying for necessary licenses with the department was a different experience previously. We had to go through consultants, who would often give wrong feedback and seek unnecessary documents, to make more money. It would take months doing the rounds of the department trying to meet the officials. It is good to see the licenses being processed within a week which would have otherwise taken months. This is very healthy for the IT industry,” he said.
