The downfall of controversial alt-right personality Milo Yiannopoulos was a chain of events initiated by an anonymous 16-year-old Canadian girl, it was learned on Saturday.
It was the teenager who tipped off a little-known conservative blog to the existence of an old podcast in which Yiannopoulos, the author and now-former Breitbart editor, is heard speaking in favor of pederasty, according to Vox.
The recording of Yiannopoulos went viral on social media, resulting in widespread condemnation.
The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) rescinded its invitation to Yiannopoulos, who was slated to give the keynote address.
Milo Yiannopolous quit Breitbart on Monday afternoon amid mounting controversy over what he said about 'coming of age of relationships'
Simon and Schuster canceled a $250,000 deal to publish his book. He was also forced to resign as technology editor from Breitbart.
But none of this could have happened were it not for the actions of a teenage girl from Canada who says that she was horrified by what she calls the embrace by mainstream conservatives of 'reactionaries' like Yiannopoulos.
'I see Milo as this embodiment of the awfulness you see over the past few years with the general tilt of millennial conservatism,' she told Vox.
'It's diverged from this traditional conservatism so much. You've seen it essentially become full of awfulness and all about attacking the left and not about actual principles.'
The video of Yiannopoulos, in which he is hear advocating for pederasty, was found by a 16-year-old Canadian girl, who alerted The Reagan Battalion. The conservative blog then re-tweeted it, enabling it to go viral and setting off the chain of events
As the fallout continued from the taped comments, Yiannopolous lost first his book deal (left) and then was told he was not welcome at conservative get-together CPAC, whose chair Matt Schlapp (right) said he was no longer welcome
Yiannopoulos wrote an 'apology' titled a 'note for idiots' on Sunday. He insisted he does not support pedophilia and mentioned sex criminals he had 'outed' during his career
'It has nothing to do with conservative ideology so much as it has with opposing the leftists, [social justice warriors], and so on and so forth.'
The girl, who was identified only as 'Julia,' describes herself as socially liberal yet right-leaning when it comes to economic and foreign policy matters.
As an avid follower of American politics, she said she was spurred to act when she read that Yiannopoulos was invited to address CPAC.
That's when she remembered hearing the infamous podcast from a few years ago in which Yiannapoulos is heard talking about the merits of underage boys having sex with older men.
She dug up the clip online and thought of ways to disseminate it.
Instead of simply posting it to her Twitter feed (which had few followers), she enlisted a conservative blog, The Reagan Battalion.
When the blog agreed to post the video, it went viral. The rest is history.
'I thought it would only get, like, 200 retweets,' Julia said. 'I had no idea that it would blow up to the extent that it did.'
She told Vox that she hopes her actions show anti-Trump conservatives that they can take action against alt-right figures that have taken over the movement.
'You shouldn't have to feel intimidated to stand up for what you believe in,' she said.
'Hopefully they'll realize that you can't keep being this reactionary movement - if you can even call it that. You can't just keep looking for enemies to attack and pointing the finger. Eventually, you have to stand up for something.'
