A man has died after being hit by a commuter train in south-west London.

British Transport Police said the man, whose age is not yet known, was hit at Whitton station just after 8am. London Ambulance Service pronounced him dead at the scene.

Waterloo-bound commuters from Twickenham and Feltham were forced to find alternative transport, while many were left stranded at Clapham Junction as police investigated the man's death.

A South West Trains spokesman said trains would not run on the loop from Waterloo via Mortlake, Hounslow and Chiswick, while trains from Waterloo to Reading and Windsor would be diverted via Hounslow.
