NEW DELHI: British Airways (BA) on Saturday cancelled its flights from London to Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, following a massive IT failure at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Consequentially, the flights to London from these three south Indian metros that were scheduled to leave on Sunday morning have also been cancelled.
“The flights from London to Delhi and Mumbai took off on Saturday.
We are expecting that these flights will leave from Delhi and Mumbai for London early on Sunday morning as scheduled. However, Saturday's flights from London to Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore and the return flights were cancelled,” a BA official in Delhi said.

On Saturday, BA experienced major IT failure at Heathrow and Gatwick due to which it had to cancel all its flights from there. The airline reportedly suffered a global computer system outage that caused massive delays and left planes stuck on runways in London.
In a statement, BA said: “We have experienced a major IT system failure that is causing very severe disruption to our flight operations worldwide. The terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick have become extremely congested and we have cancelled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick before 6pm UK time (on Saturday)… We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this is causing our customers and we are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

The impact is particularly severe for travellers from India as the peak summer holiday travel has begun. London is a popular hub for Indian globetrotters for taking connections from Heathrow, apart from the city being one of the biggest destinations for desi holidayers.
Air India and Jet Airways, the two Indian airlines that fly to London, said their flights were not affected and were operating to UK as scheduled.
