On Friday, Indrani woke up at 5am as per the jail timetable. She collapsed inside the barrack around 6am. The jail authorities immediately alerted the doctors, who tried to revive Indrani. When their attempts failed, however, Dr W Shaikh from J J hospital was called in. He advised that Indrani be immediately be moved to the hospital.

"She is undergoing treatment at present," said Bipin Kumar Singh, Inspector General (IG) (Prisons). He added, "We are conducting an inquiry into the incident to ascertain if there was any lapse on the part of the jail authorities. If anything is found amiss, we will take appropriate action."

As per the jail authorities, Indrani kept to herself in the barrack. At times, she would indulge in small talk with fellow inmates, but she spent most of her free time reading books. At present, she was reading Bhagwad Gita in her cell.

"Ever since Indrani had been in the prison, none of her relatives have come to meet her. The only people who visit her are her lawyers and officials from the British Embassy, who are providing her with help," said Singh. He added, "We are waiting for Indrani to gain her consciousness, after which we will be able to record her statement. That would clear a lot of things."

Meanwhile, Principal Home Secretary (Prisons) Vijay Satbir Singh said, "The probe by the IG (Prisons) will cover all aspects, including whether the medicine consumed by Indrani was prescribed by doctors, and if there was an overdose, how it happened." He added, "The probe will also ascertain if there was any negligence or foul play on the part of the jail authorities. The entire exercise will be completed in a week."
