A young dad-to-be died while cooling off at a waterfall as temperatures soared over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Dani Khan, 19, died after leaping into Wain Wath Force in the North Yorkshire Dales on Friday.

Friend Ayaz Ali, 18, told how Dani, who could not swim, joined his pals having fun in the popular swimming spot, not realising how deep it was.

It is believed his three friends tried to rescue Dani, who was under the water for 15 minutes.

The pal said Dani's wife Sonia Hussain is pregnant and described him as a "lovely man."

Ayaz said: "I've known him for five years and would see him literally everyday, he was always creating memories.

“When I found out he had passed away it killed me, it's like he took my soul with him, it will never be the same without him.

"Let this be a lesson to everyone that you never know what's around the corner.

He added: “I only spoke to him the night before and he came and gave me my sunglasses that I left with him on the day and said 'see you tomorrow night Ayaz'.

"I didn't think I'd be seeing him on a hospital bed taken away from this world.

"What's happened has happened now all we can do is stay strong in the name of my beautiful brother Dani and be there for his family."

Ayaz said Dani, from Middlesbrough, had gone for a day out with friends to the beauty spot near the village of Keld.

He said he heard other friends were in the water and despite not being able to swim he jumped in, possibly not realising how deep it was.

His friends desperately tried to keep him above water but struggled to keep hold of him, and he was under water for 15 minutes before being pulled out.

The 19-year-old, who was a student at Middlesbrough College studying mechanical engineering, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital were he was later pronounced dead.

Ayaz said he and friends visited the falls the following day to see where Dani had lost his life.

He added: "My car broke down and it rained all the way but when we got there, the sun came out and it felt like he was there with us."

The emergency services, including police, the fire services and volunteers from Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, were called to the river to reports of several people in difficulty at about 5pm on Friday.

Two people needed medical treatment and Dani was rushed to James Cook Hospital by air ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “There are not believed to by any suspicious circumstances, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”

The beauty spot is listed on a wild swimming site as a wide waterfall about three metres high with a “plunge pool” alongside limestone cliffs.
