Terror of cyclist after road rage clash with BMW driver near Richmond Park

Road rage: A BMW driver 'attacked' a group of cyclists

A cyclist has told of his fear after being confronted in the middle of the street by the driver of a BMW and its occupants in a road rage clash.

Personal trainer Martin Conway was cycling from Richmond Park at around 4.30pm yesterday when he alleges a black BMW deliberately swerved into his path.

He claims the car was deliberately targeting cyclists on a cycle lane in an attempt to knock them off.

Two witnesses claim the car mounted the kerb at one point, swerving at bike users.

Kerb crawler: Witnesses reported seeing the BMW mount the pavement

Mr Conway, 41, told the Standard: “I heard a car come close behind me, a black car swerved into my path and I wobbled but I didn’t lose my balance.

“The car tried again with the cyclist in front, again, he wobbled, steadied himself and didn’t fall."

“At that point the driver then mounted the pavement. Two cyclists came off their bikes and another swerved into a fence."

Mr Conway said the driver then came to a halt at a red light on Priory Lane and started hurling abuse at the group of cyclists.

He said: “The driver told me he was going to f*** me up.

“After being threatened I called 999. At this point the driver got out of the car.

“He then pushed me to the ground and threw my phone on the floor, stamping on it until he smashed it.”

Another cyclist, Tom Keech, stopped at the scene after allegedly seeing the car mount the kerb.

After noticing him taking pictures, the driver allegedly grabbed Mr Keech by the neck in an attempt to get his phone.

The 19 year-old told the Standard: “He saw me with my phone so I ran but then I got pushed up against a phonebox.

“I’ve had the odd insult thrown at me because I cycle daily and I’ve seen a few road rage incidents but I was in a state of shock.

After failing to grab Mr Keech's phone, the men drove off, throwing empty water bottles at the cyclists.

Mr Conway added he had been left completely shaken by the incident and about riding in general.

He added: “I think I was lucky. I think we cyclists need to be vigilant. This road rage incident could have turned much more nasty.

"Maybe they thought it was funny."

“I’m a regular cyclist and you see this kind of thing on YouTube a lot but it’s left me completely shaken and whenever a car comes up behind me now I get nervous.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “We attended the scene where it is alleged that two males who had been in a vehicle became involved in a dispute with a male cyclist.

“A phone belonging to the cyclist was thrown to the ground and smashed.

“Officers from Wandsworth are investigating, at this stage there have been no arrests.”
