Seven men involved in smash-and-grab robberies on luxury shops in London have been jailed.

The gang took part in 10 robberies from 2007 at stores including Prada and Jimmy Choo and Alexander McQueen's warehouse in Islington, north London.

Reece Dunford, 31, of Waltham Abbey, Essex, said to have "orchestrated" the raids, was jailed for 12 years.

The group was arrested following a raid on Mappin and Webb in Fenchurch Street last year.

Some members of the gang drove up to the jewellery shop on motorbikes and burst through the door.

Two of them ran inside, still wearing their helmets and carrying sledgehammers and an axe, before smashing glass cabinets. They made off with Rolex watches worth £300,000.

'Shoppers terrified'

Police later raided an address in Islington where Dunford and Hatton Garden jeweller Yair Cohen, 71, were caught in possession of some of the watches.

Howard Tobias, reviewing lawyer for CPS London, said: "Many of the raids were carried out during opening hours and left shoppers and staff terrified and fearing for their lives.

"I hope that the sentences handed down send out a strong message."

Det Con Simon Davison, of the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad, said: "Dunford was involved in every incident in one way or another and clearly started to think he was untouchable."

Sentencing took place at Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court.

Dunford, of Osprey Road, Waltham Abbey, received his 12-year sentence for conspiracy to rob, two counts of conspiracy to burgle, conspiracy to produce Class B drugs and conspiracy to handle stolen goods.

Cohen, 71, of Woodmill Road, Hackney, east London, was jailed for six years for conspiracy to handle stolen goods, converting criminal property, money laundering and cheating the public revenue.

Vincent Kamara, 28, of Endsleigh Street, Camden, north London, was jailed for 12 years for conspiracy to commit robbery.

Boz Burbridge, 31, of Calthorpe Street, Camden, received seven years, and David Mays, 33, of Chessington Avenue, Bexleyheath, south east London, eight years, both for conspiracy to commit robbery.

Danny St Luce, 29, of Sebbon Street, Islington, received seven years and Patrick Spencer O'Brien, 23, of Arlington Square, Islington, 12 years, both for conspiracy to commit robbery.

Two others - Hollie Dowding, 25, of Waltham Abbey, and Rusudan Kritcheli, 49, of Hackney - pleaded guilty to conspiracy to handling goods and money laundering respectively and have yet to be sentenced.
