A woman was left "petrified" when a rabble of rowdy rugby fans scrummed her car in Clapham Junction after England were knocked out of the World Cup at the weekend.

Laura Louise Morris, 21, faced an onslaught from a group of men as she drove along St John's Hill in Battersea on Saturday night.

Witnesses described how the men gathered around the car and began attempting to push it backwards, while Ms Morris sat defenceless.

Her father James Morris told the Wandsworth Guardian: "[They] damaged the front of the car and she was absolutely petrified - police have the CCTV and many passers-by took pictures and videos."

Charlie Adsett saw the drama unfolding as he left The Falcon pub, where he watched England lose to Australia.

He described how there was a "jovial" atmosphere before Ms Morris' car was targeted.

He told the Standard: "I was with some friends at the pub. Then someone in the street got a rugby ball and they started kicking it around. Everyone was laughing and joking.

"A few people got carried away and started scrumming the car for about 30 seconds. I think they picked [the driver] at random. Then police turned up and everyone dispersed."

He continued: "I do not think anyone was aware that she was upset. They were not trying to damage the car. Everyone was in a jovial mood."

Police confirmed they were investigating an allegation of criminal damage following the incident.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating criminal damage to a car that took place on October 3 at about 11.55pm outside Clapham Junction rail station.

"The bonnet of the vehicle was damaged by a group of males while the female driver was inside.

"There have been no arrests and enquiries continue."
