A former adviser to the Bank of England has appeared in court charged with the murder of his supply teacher wife.

Oxford graduate Stuart Andrews, 54, attended Maidstone Magistrates' Court on Saturday accused of strangling Caroline Andrews, 52, in Benenden on February 3, Kent Police said.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday February 16.

Up to 30 officers carrying guns piled onto a busy London-bound train before police eventually tracked down Andrews in the capital the following afternoon.

Officers waited to question him while he was then treated in hospital with "self-inflicted" injuries.

The couple lived with their two youngest daughters, Polly, 19, and Kitty, 14, as well as two dogs, in the quiet Kent village of Benenden, where Mr Andrews runs Cruxnet, a small IT business.

But it is understood their landlord had recently given three months' notice to leave.

Colleagues of Mrs Andrews at Benenden Primary School described her as a "lovely" woman and said they are all devastated.

She was said to be deeply proud of her two daughters and sons, Charles, 26, and Henry, 23, who had both graduated from university.

Tributes have been paid to the "well-respected" teacher by colleagues.

"Caroline has been a loved and well-respected supply teacher for a number of years who has enriched the lives of the many children she taught."
Head teacher Gill Knox

Head teacher Gill Knox said: "The tragic death of Caroline Andrews has left the staff at Benenden C of E School shocked and saddened.

"Caroline and her family live in the village and are well known at the school. Caroline has been a loved and well-respected supply teacher for a number of years who has enriched the lives of the many children she taught.

"At the present time we cannot comment on what has happened but our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all who knew her and will miss her."
