UK weather forecast: Cloudy and cool for most of Britain - but a wet evening ahead for some

Today's weather looks set to be cloudy and cooler for most areas with just occasional sunshine and scattered showers, mainly in the north and west.

The showers will be heaviest and most frequent in western Scotland with some thunder likely. However, persistent rain will spread into Wales and southern England during the evening, making for a wet start to the weekend for many.

Temperature-wise, parts of eastern England will see highs of 20C, but elsewhere in Britain it will be cooler, with temperatures sitting around the  16 - 18C mark.

London

It is going to be mainly dry during the morning, but becoming dull with drizzle or rain by the evening. Moderate south-westerly winds. Max temp 17-20C (63-68F).

Edinburgh

It will be bright with some spells of sunshine, but there will also be scattered light showers around. Moderate south-westerly winds. Max temp 15-18C (59-64F).

Glasgow

It looks set to be dull with cloudy skies and also showers, heavy during the afternoon and a risk of thunder. Gentle south-westerly winds. Max temp 15-18C (59-64F).

Manchester

It looks set to be dull with cloudy skies and also showers, heavy during the afternoon. Scattered showers are possible during the evening too. Cool again with a fresh south-westerly wind. Max temp 14-17C (57-63F).

Midlands

It is going to be dry for a while with sunshine, but heavy showers are expected during the afternoon. Persistent rain developing during the evening. Fresh westerly winds. Max temp 18-21C (64-70F).

Leeds and Sheffield

It will be bright with sunny spells and scattered light showers. These will mostly fall during the afternoon. Persistent rain developing during the evening. Moderate south-westerly winds. Max temp 16-19C (61-66F), but cooler over many upland areas.

South West

A few showers first thing. Then it is going to become wet with plenty of cloud and spells of rain, some heavy during the afternoon. A wet evening too. Strengthening south-westerly winds. Max temp 16-19C (61-66F).

Wales

Some showers for a time in South Wales. Then it is expected to be an unsettled and wet day with a lot of cloud and outbreaks of rain, some heavy during the afternoon and evening. Brisk south-westerly winds. Max temp 16-19C (61-66F). In North Wales it will be bright with sunny spells and showers, heavy during the afternoon. Persistent rain developing during the evening. Fresh south-westerly winds. Max temp 16-19C (61-66F).

Northern Ireland

A mixture of sunny spells, a fair amount of cloud but also showers, some heavy and possibly thundery. A moderate south-westerly breeze. Max temp 15-18C (59-64F).

What will the weather be like tomorrow and Sunday?

On Saturday, early rain will clear away from south-east England to leave a drier and brighter afternoon. There will be a mixture of sunny spells and showers for most other areas. Rain will move into south-east England again by the evening.

Sunday will remain fairly unsettled with showery rain moving east across many parts but the South-East may stay largely dry.
