20:43   Japan says avoid 'unfortunate history' as WWII defeat marked
Japan today urged China to not focus on "unfortunate history" but to look forward as Beijing marked the 70th anniversary of Tokyo's World War II defeat with a huge military parade.

Japan's nationalist premier Shinzo Abe and other officials are staying away from the commemorations celebrating an end to a conflict that China says costs millions of its citizens their lives during Tokyo's imperial march across Asia.

Top Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters that he had no comment on the parade itself.

But "now 70 years have passed since the end of the war, and we hope that (China) will tackle common issues shared by the global community in a forward-looking manner, instead of focusing on China's unfortunate history," he said, without elaborating.

The conflict is officially known in China as the "Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War".

Leaders of major Western countries have stayed away from the parade, though Russia's President Vladimir Putin was prominently in attendance.

20:29   Trump dunks on basketball great Kareem's criticism
Donald Trump's latest feud is with US basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, whose thoughtful critique of the billionaire presidential hopeful led Trump to angrily retort: "You don't have a clue about life."

The Republican frontrunner's withering response was to a column in yesterday's Washington Post written by Abdul-Jabbar, the National Basketball Association hall of famer who compared Trump unfavorably to liberal Democrat Bernie Sanders and accused the real estate mogul of waging a "vendetta against the press."

Abdul-Jabbar, who retired in 1989 as the NBA's all-time leading scorer and emerged as an author and cultural commentator, offered an unsparing evaluation of Trump's actions on the campaign trail, and notably during the first Republican debate when he snapped at moderator Megyn Kelly of
Fox News.

"Bad enough to alienate women in this way, but there's even more insidious political crime here: attacking the First  Amendment's protection of a free press by menacing journalists," Abdul-Jabbar wrote.

18:37   Grand Alliance a sinking ship: BJP
The BJP today said that Opposition 'Mahagath bandhan' or 'grand alliance' was a "sinking ship" from which Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was the first one to jump off to save himself and his party.

"It has now been proved that grand alliance is a sinking ship. Yadav was the first one to jump off from it because nobody wants to be on a ship which is going down. It seems that his 'swabhiman' (self-respect) awakened after the Swabhiman Rally of the alliance," BJP national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said.

Expressing happiness over SP quitting the grand alliance, Hussain pointed out that Yadav must have realised that senior leaders among the constituents, who had worked with socialist leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia and Jaya Prakash Narayan were not ready to hobnob with their bete noire Congress.

"The mammoth rally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bhagalpur was an eye-opener for Yadav. He must have understood that the grand alliance has no chance to win in Bihar and a defeat will adversely affect his party's chances in UP Assembly elections," Hussain added.

The grand alliance, comprising six Janata Parivar parties including JD(U), RJD, SP, was cobbled up at the behest of Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar to throw a challenge to BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in state Assembly polls scheduled in October-November this year. Yadav was unanimously accepted as its President.

14:43   Face off #2: Indrani may meet Peter again today
Former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, husband of accused Indrani Mukerjea in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, underwent a fresh round of questioning today and is likely to be confronted with his wife -- again.

Peter, who was questioned for nearly 12 hours till late last night in connection with the case, reached Khar police station this morning. Two hours later, Indrani was also brought to the police station.

Both Peter and Indrani are likely to be brought face-to-face, a senior officer said, as police investigation into the saga aims to unravel the three-year-old murder mystery.

"Mukerjea was called again at the Khar Police Station today as we are trying to corroborate his statement with that of Indrani, with whom he co-founded INX Media," the officer said.

Indrani was arrested on August 25 for the alleged murder of her daughter Sheena. Meanwhile, the Forensic Science Laboratory at Kalina here has begun the process of analysing the samples of Indrani and skeletal remains found in Raigad district to match the DNA and determine if the body was that of Sheena.

Yesterday, police carried out a search at Peter's flat in Worli and took away some documents and a laptop. The same set of questions given to Peter was also given to Indrani, who was brought in from the Bandra Police lock-up and made to sit in an adjoining room.

Some of the questions posed to Peter pertained to his financial transactions, especially his investments, his share in various companies, and how much money he had given to Indrani, son Rahul, step-daughter Sheena, and younger step-daughter Vidhie, who is Indrani's daughter from her previous marriage.

Sheena Bora was engaged to Rahul, Peter's son from an earlier marriage, when she was allegedly murdered on April 24, 2012. The 24-year-old was allegedly strangled in a car, then her body was burnt and dumped at a forest in Raigad, about 84 km from Mumbai.

Her purported remains were found a month later and buried by the police, which treated the body as unclaimed. For three years, Indrani Mukerjea told her family and friends that Sheena had shifted to the US. Recently, a man claiming to be Sheena's biological father, Sidhharth Das, surfaced and said that he was not in touch with Indrani.

14:14   I hate my mother, she's a witch, says diary; cops say it belongs to Sheena
A diary believed to belong to Sheena Bora has been recovered by the Mumbai police and will be part of the evidence when the case comes up for trial.

An NDTV report, quoting entries made in the diary, says, "Depression has encircled me from all sides. Disgusting life it is. I hate my mother, that bloody b***h. She is not a mother. She is a witch...''

Sheena Bora's mother Indrani Mukerjea, who was arrested last week for her murder, has allegedly confessed to her role in the murder, says police.

The police says that the diary was found at the Kolkata home of Sanjeev Khanna, Indrani Mukerjea's ex-husband. Khanna has allegedly confessed to his complicity in the killing of his step daughter on April 24, 2012.

Indrani, who earlier maintained that Sheena was alive and in the US, and was not coming forward as she hated her. According to the police investigating the case, Sheena was strangled in a car by her mother, Khanna, and by Indrani's driver.

Police say that the diary, which is at least 10 years old, show a fractured relationship between Indrani and her daughter.

The entry dated February 11, 2003 says "Oh! Happy Birthday to me! But I am not happy. It seems as if I have got nothing in my life. Nothing! My future seems very bleak to me."

12:34   China flexes military might celebrating WWII victory over Japan
China today displayed its military might by showcasing more than a dozen long-range missiles billed by state media as "aircraft carrier-killers" during an unprecedented massive military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its victory against Japan in the World War II.

Ballistic missiles, tanks, amphibious assault vehicles, drones and other military equipment rolled through the sprawling Tiananmen Square here, with President Xi Jinping hailing China's victory against Japan in WWII as a "great triumph" which "crushed Japanese militarists".

Over 80 per cent of the war machines on display was being shown to the public for the first time, state media reported. Troops from 17 countries, including Pakistan and Russia, formed part of 1,000 foreign soldiers who took part in the parade.

Some 200 fighter jets took to the skies and 70,000 doves and balloons were released capping the extravaganza. Flanked by Russian President Vladimir Putin, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and around 30 other world leaders like UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and India's Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh, Xi minced no words in targeting Japan for the WWII excess in which he said over 35 million Chinese suffered casualties.

Xi, the country's most powerful leader in decades after the first reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, said China would remain committed to "the path of peaceful development" and unexpectedly announced to cut 300,000 troops from its 2.3-million strong military, but gave no timeframe.

Xi made use of the occasion to rally round national sentiments highlighting the humiliation suffered under Japanese in the eight year war starting from 1937. "In that devastating war, the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression started the earliest and lasted the longest," he said.

The massive victory parade was also a triumph of Xi's leadership as he displayed complete control of the military against which he launched a massive anti-corruption crackdown leading to investigations into 40 top military Generals.

The unprecedented display of military might comes at a time when China is in a standoff with its neighbours over South China Sea and East China Sea. China's claim of sovereignty over almost all of South China Sea is hotly contested by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

12:24   Europe swamped by migrant millions
Heart-rending pictures of a toddler's lifeless body washed ashore on a Turkish beach sparked horror on Wednesday as the cost of Europe's growing refugee crisis hit home.

The images of a tiny child lying face down in the surf at one of Turkey's main tourist resorts has once more put a human face on the dangers faced by tens of thousands of desperate people who risk life and limb to seek a new life in Europe.

Wearing a red T-shirt and blue shorts, the child -- identified as three-year-old Aylan Kurdi -- is believed to be one of least 12 Syrians who died when their boats sank trying to reach Greece.

The bleak image spread like lightning through social media and dominated front pages from Spain to Sweden, with commentators unanimous it had rammed home the horrors faced by those fleeing war and conflict in the Middle East and Africa.

Circulating with the Turkish hashtag "#KiyiyaVuranInsanlik" ("Humanity washed ashore"), the picture made it to Twitter's top world trending topics.

"Tiny victim of a human catastrophe," said Britain's Daily Mail, while Italy's La Repubblica tweeted the words: "One photo to silence the world."

"If these extraordinarily powerful images of a dead Syrian child washed up on a beach don't change Europe's attitude to refugees, what will?" Britain's Independent said in remarks echoed in newspapers across the continent.

On Wednesday, the UN Security Council said it was discussing a draft resolution to address the crisis that diplomats said may allow an EU naval force to seize ships operated by migrant smugglers in international waters.

08:42   Narayan Sai's bail hearing in bribery case likely today
The bail plea of self-styled godman Asaram's son Narayan Sai in connection with a bribery case is likely to come up for
hearing before Special Anti-Corruption Bureau court judge N B Pithwa today.

Sai, who has been behind the bars in a rape case filed by a Surat-based woman, had submitted the bail plea on Tuesday in the
special court for ACB cases through his advocate Kalpesh Desai.

He is accused of offering bribe to police officers and others to weaken the rape case filed against him.

The bail plea says the trial of the bribery case has not commenced even after one year since the FIR was registered and it is not likely to begin in the near future.

It further says that since other accused in the case were granted bail by the Gujarat High Court, Sai should also get the relief.

Sai was arrested for allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulting one of the two Surat-based sisters, who was the inmate of his ashram here between 2002 and 2005.

It was during Sai's remand period (in connection with the rape case) that the Surat city crime branch claimed to have unearthed a plan to bribe policemen, doctors and even judicial officers to dilute the rape case.

03:32   India strongly rejects Pak raising Kashmir at UN
Strongly rejecting Pakistan's call for plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir, India has asserted that the state is an integral part of the country and its citizens have chosen a democratically-elected state government as it lambasted Islamabad for raising the issue at the UN.

"Pakistan must know that this is the platform of the Inter-Parliamentary Union where the 2030 development agenda is being discussed," Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan told PTI.

She strongly rejected Pakistan raising the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the Fourth World Conference of Speakers yesterday, saying that the Pakistan representative's remarks on the issue in the UN are "totally irrelevant". Raking up the Kashmir issue at yet another UN forum, Acting Speaker of the National Assembly Of Pakistan Murtaza Javed Abbasi had said in his speech that "it is time" to enable the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination through an "independent and impartial plebiscite under the United Nations".

Mahajan said Jammu and Kashmir has been an integral part of India since independence and elections have been held in the state for the past many years.
