A horsebox has caught fire on a major road near Cambridge, sending flames shooting more than 20ft into the air.

A terrified horse was rescued from the vehicle by its owner and left standing on the carriageway of the A14, which was closed at the Histon exit.

Photos taken by drivers showed the blaze taking hold at the front of the vehicle, engulfing the cab completely.

Two crews of firefighters from the Cambridge Fire and Rescue Service had to wear breathing apparatus to battle the flames, which was brought under control within 45 minutes.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said police were called to the fire at 2.20pm.

“The horses are safely out of the transporter, but are in the carriageway,” she added. “It is unclear how many animals are involved.”

The A14’s eastbound carriageway was open but police were advising drivers to seek alternative routes as long delays were expected.

No injuries have been reported.
