A 23-year-old man remains in hospital after he was hit in a suspected one-punch attack as he tried to break up a violent brawl.
Emergency services were called to Orchid Avenue in Surfers Paradise in the early hours of Friday morning where they found the man convulsing on the ground.
The victim was treated for a serious brain injury after he was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
He was initially thought to be in a serious condition but has since been downgraded to non-life threatening.
A 29-year-old German national, who is in Australia on a tourist visa, has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

A 23-year-old man has suffered a serious brain injury after a suspected one-punch attack
The man was allegedly struck with a blow to the head after he intervened to stop an altercation between two other men outside a nightclub around 3am.
He was punched from behind, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.
Police could not confirmed whether the victim knew those involved in the fight, who fled the scene.
However, police located the men at The Esplanade a short time later.

The 29-year-old Home Hill man is expected to face the Southport Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.
A second man, aged 27, who was questioned over the incident, has been charged with public nuisance. He will face the same court on November 16.
Investigations are continuing.
