MUMBAI: Indrani Mukerjea (43) flew to London two months after allegedly kidnapping and killing her daughter Sheena Bora on April 24, 2012. Investigators at Khar police station said Indrani spent most of her time in London for nearly three years after committing the offence so as to evade questions about Sheena’s mysterious disappearance from the city.

Before flying to London, Indrani sacked her driver and accomplice in the crime, Shyamvar Rai (45). But he remained tight-lipped about the crime because “Indrani paid him Rs 5 lakh”.
On Tuesday, police took Rai to a roadside luggage vendor in Dadar, from where the two bags to transport Sheena’s body had been bought for Rs 5000. The vendor identified Rai.
Investigators have sought call data records of Indrani before and after the crime and the total number of calls she exchanged with Rai and ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna before flying to London. The plot to kill Sheena was hatched around January 2012, after the victim got engaged to Peter Mukherjea’s son Rahul at his mother’s Dehradun home in December 2011.

Police learnt about Indrani’s stay in London when they picked up Rai on August 21 during a nakabandi. He was booked under the Arms Act after he was found in illegal possession of a 7.62mm imported pistol. “Rai said after the offence, he was sacked and Indrani told him she was flying to London. Rai said he helped Indrani and Khanna get a rented car for Rs 50,000 for four days. It was used to recce the spot to dispose of Sheena’s body, kidnap and kill Sheena and then take her body to Raigad-Pen. He said he was jobless for three years after Indrani left in June 2012 and hardly was seen in Mumbai,” a police official told TOI.

Indrani reportedly holds three passports—of an NRI, UK and Ireland. “We have sought details from the regional passport office about Sheena’s passport and are also trying to procure the list of passengers who flew to the US in 2012 (April 24 to May 1). We are also getting details of Indrani’s travel to London during this period,” said the officer. Police commissioner Rakesh Maria was unavailable for comment.
