Murder squad detectives have launched an investigation after a woman was stabbed to death in a house in the exclusive west London area of Chelsea.

Police are questioning a 48-year-old woman after a 35-year-old woman was stabbed on Sunday.

The victim was pronounced dead at the house in Stadium Street, off Lots Road, shortly after police and paramedics were called at around 1.20am this morning.

Police believe they know the victim's identity, but have not yet named her.

Scotland Yard said a 48-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at a central London police station.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a woman at an address in Stadium Street, Chelsea.

"Officers were called at around 1.20am to reports of a woman suffering stab wounds at the address.

"Paramedics also attended and the 35-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.45am.

"Although officers believe they know the identity of the deceased, we await formal identification to take place.

"Inquiries are underway to trace next of kin. A post mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

"The investigation is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Simon Ashwin from the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

"A 48-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at a central London police station. Inquiries continue."
