Volvo Cars has brought car safety equipment maker Autoliv into a self-driving car project in Sweden's second largest city, the company announced on Wednesday.

Volvo and Autoliv aim to introduce active safety systems in 100 driverless cars that will be used by commuters in Gothenburg from 2017.

"Autonomous driving will make our roads better and safer. The sooner we can develop the necessary technologies and start offering them in our cars the better," Volvo Cars' chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said in a statement.

The project - described by Volvo as the world's first large-scale initiative with autonomous driving - began in 2013 and involves Swedish transport authorities and universities.

Volvo said the project will lead to more efficient road and vehicle usage, less traffic congestion and improved town planning.

Self-driving cars that use sensors and radar systems will be better at pre-empting accidents, Volvo said, adding that humans are believed to cause over 90 percent of all fatal car crashes. Endit
