4x State Champ MARK WEBER joins the ST JOE Wrestling Program - Coaching Staff

4x State Champ Mark Weber to help Coach St Joe (Coach Jim Gioiosa)

4x State Champ & U of M Graduate - Mark Weber Joins the St Joe Wrestling Program Coaching Staff

St Joe is proud to announce the addition of 4x State Champion Mark Weber to their Wrestling Program's - Coaching Staff.

Mark will join St Joe Head Wrestling Coach Jim Gioiosa... Coach Taylor Misel & Zach Mallo.

Mark is a amazing young man and will add significant depth to our High School, Middle School & Youth Wrestling Program... says Head Coach Jim Gioiosa.

Mark's accomplishments on and off the mat are staggering... there have been nearly 1,000,000 High School Wrestlers in the 80+ years of Michigan Wrestling... and yet there have only been 20... 4x State Champions.

Mark is one of them.

He was also the Michigan

Recipient of the 2008 Dave Schultz Award

...

Just how GOOD do you have to be to win the Dave Schultz Award?

Well.... in

2009 David Taylor

won it... in

2010 Logan Steiber

won it...

Not only is Mark a 4x Champion but also a 4 year Honor Roll Student, a member of National Honor's Society and Graduate of the

University of Michigan

in Kinesiology & Education.

Mark obviously has (very) High Standards for himself... and also enjoyed TEAM Success during his HS Athletic Career when his HS Team Goodrich captured the 2008 Michigan Division III State Wrestling Title.

Winning at any level boils down to execution and expectations... Mark EXPECTS to Win.  And he EXPECTS our Team to Win.  After his successful High School Career he was a 4 year wrestler at the University of Michigan under Coach Joe McFarland. Upon graduating from the University of Michigan he helped open and operate one of the state's Premiere Youth Wrestling Clubs... the All American Grappling Academy... where he Coached 100's of Young Wrestlers between the ages of 4-14.

It's important to

St Joe

(and significant for any Athletic Department) to attract and retain some of the BEST Coaches in the Nation... and it's a DOUBLE WIN... when those Coaches are also Teacher / Educators.

Mark's Education Degree from the University of Michigan makes him a prime candidate for the next opening in his curriculum.  Mark will begin Substitute Teaching in the area in September.

Ideally we'd like to see Mark secure a Full Time Teaching Position in St Joe in either the Elementary, Middle or High School.  His education degree from the University of Michigan allows him to be considered for the Health Education curriculum 6-12 and Physical Education K-12.  Mark's preference would be Elementary or Middle School Physical Education.

St Joe is developing a year round (wrestling) training center for athletes of all ages. The scholastic season for wresting is November - March for the High School students and January - March for the Middle School kids.  St Joe will also continue to offer the St Joe Youth Wrestling Program for ages 4-14 November - March (and an abbreviated schedule year round for those athletes that continue to wrestle year round).

"We encourage all of our kids to be 3-Sport Athletes if possible." (said Gioiosa).  "Wrestling is a wonderful CORE builder and most Coaches agree that Wrestling helps enhance balance, strength, skill and confidence in nearly all of the other Scholastic Sports such as Football, Baseball, Soccer and Track."

Mark will be significant contributor to our High School Team... and he'll play an even more significant role in our Youth Wrestling Program.

"Having Mark, Taylor and Zach (Assistant Coach Taylor Misel & Assistant Coach Zach Mallo) in the Wrestling Room adds a RARE amount of coverage for instruction and hands-on Coaching.  Wrestling is very visceral.  Verbal Coaching can be very effective... however "hands on" Coaching can dramatically cut a students learning curve and compress time.  Most High School (& Youth) Wrestling Rooms are fortunate if they have "1" or "2" hands-on facilitators of Coaching instruction... at St Joe... we have FOUR... and that number is growing!"

The broad coverage and High Level instruction in our Wrestling Room is unparalleled (at ALL of our Age Groups).  We have assembled and are now solidifying a foundation of Coaches, Contributors, Educators, Guest Clinicians and Supportive Parents that will slowly help us develop a Program that will continue to manifest some exciting results!

The St Joe Wrestling Program (known as the Champion Factory) now has the support and contribution of some of the best Wrestling minds (Coaches, Athletes and Educators) in the Nation.

Coach Andy Radenbaugh

(who Coached St Joe for 23 Seasons) and yet is still in his mid 40's... is never very far from the Program.  He stepped away a few years ago to help his family accomplish some goals that would have been difficult had he continued (full time) Coaching for the Bears... however he still teaching English at the High School and never misses a match.  Andy's coaching experience and continued contribution to the Program is invaluable.  He is one of the most accomplished (Michigan) High School Wrestlers in History.  Andy won 2 State Championships in 1985 & 1986 for the Bears and was a 4 year Wrestling standout for Notre Dame (87-91).

Coach Matt Culver

is also a Teacher/Coach for the St Joe Bears.  Matt coached the High School Team with Andy for many years and now leads the 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Wrestling Program with

Coach (and Teacher) Burke Locke

.  The St Joe Youth Wrestling Program feeds the Middle School Wrestling Program... and the Middle School feeds the High School.  Matt & Burke do an outstanding job and have recently been responsible for significant increases in participation.

"Matt and Burke are 2 of the most respected, admired and liked teachers in the St Joe School System.  They are outstanding Coaches and the future of the High School Program's success to a large degree will be contingent on the strength (and depth) of our Middle School Program.

The St Joe Wrestling Program is lead by National Champion & Coach Jim Gioiosa.  Gioiosa & (Coaches) Taylor Misel, Zach Mallo and (now) Mark Weber will also Coach the High School Program (and the Summer USA Freestyle & Greco Program).

Coach (Mark) Weber will be one of the main leaders of the St Joe Youth Wrestling Program (along with Coach Chip Gott).

Coach Gott

has been coaching Youth (and High School) Wrestling for nearly 2 decades and coached dozens of outstanding young men including his oldest son Terner.  Chip's son recently graduated from John Carroll University where he was a 4 year starter (in wrestling) and 3x National Qualfier.  Terner also holds the distinction of being one of the very few wrestlers in the Nation to win 200 matches in High School... and over 100 matches in College.  Chip also has 2 younger sons (Jett and Tagg) that wrestle with the St Joe Youth Wrestling Club.

Coach Taylor Misel & Coach Zach Mallo

will focus primarily on the High School Program with Coach Gioiosa & Weber.

"Taylor & Zach (and Mark) are all about the same age (25)... they have a PASSION for the sport that is palpable.  Our YOUTH, Middle School and High School kids probably don't (yet) understand the level of excellence, commitment and achievement that our Coaching Team brings to the table."

Coach Mallo was a 4x State Qualifier and won over 200 matches in High School... Coach Misel won over 175 matches and both have years of college, folkstyle, freestyle and greco roman wrestling experience.

Being an "outstanding" athlete doesn't always equate to being a "great" coach (in many sports).  However Wrestling tends to have that direct correlation.

Dan Gable

was undefeated in High School and was 118-1 in College... he would eventually go on to Coach the University of Iowa... and become one of the most successful Coaches in America Collegiate History.  He helped coach the Hawkeye's to 25 consecutive Big 10 Titles and 15 National Championships.

John Smith

&

Cael Sanderson

are arguably 2 of the best, most recognized wrestlers in the world... Smith accumulating 6 World Titles and 2 Olympic Gold Medals... while Sanderson accomplishing the near impossible... going 159-0 in college wrestling, winning 4 NCAA Championships and and Olympic Gold.  Both Smtih... and Sanderson are considered 2 of the Nation's best College Wrestling Coaches.

St Joe is VERY proud of our past... and we are even MORE excited about our future.  We believe that...

Coach Zach Mallo

Coach Chip Gott

Coach Taylor Misel

Coach Jim Gioiosa

Coach Mark Weber

Coach Burke Locke

Coach Andy Randenbaugh

Coach Matt Culver

.... and the dozens of committed, passionate parents, alumni and community supporters will help St Joe Wrestlers - of ALL Ages - have Meaningful and Memorable Mat Experiences for many years to come!
