'Madden NFL 16' gets lovingly overblown movie trailer

To prime the promotional pump for Tuesday’s release of ‘Madden NFL 16,’ Electronic Arts has released a faux trailer for “Madden: The Movie.”

Starring Dave Franco (”21 Jump Street”) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin from “Superbad”), the 5-minute trailer features cameos from NFL players Rob Gronkowski, Julio Jones and Colin Kaepernick (playing Al Pacino in “Scent of a Woman”). In the role of “doomed mentor”: former Jets coach Rex Ryan.

The movie’s plot starts with “Double Dragon” and quickly mutates into “Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven” crossed with nearly every training montage you’ve seen. The trailer hits many of the familiar action film tropes, including the trifecta of Daddy Issues, Betrayal and Overwrought Motivational Speeches.

Unfortunately for EA, the ad comes soon after “Kung Fury,” which mined a similar theme of ‘80s/’90s action flicks and nostalgia without the mercenary overtones. (It’s only 30 minutes long and on YouTube. If you haven’t seen it already, I highly recommend taking an extended work break and watching it. It's Friday, after all.)

‘Madden’ — the game, not the movie — arrives Tuesday on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The basic game will run the standard $59.99; a deluxe edition with sundry “Ultimate Team” tchotchkes will set you back $69.99. Microsoft has also released a $399 Xbox One bundle that includes the system with a 1TB drive, a download token for 'Madden NFL 16' and a year of EA Access.

Just for fun, here is the “Madden Season” ad with Franco and Kevin Hart that EA released last August prior to the release of “Madden NFL 15.”
