Bon-Ton settles with state on domestic violence claim

New York's attorney general says retailer The Bon-Ton Stores has agreed to revise its policy toward employees who are domestic-violence victims and won't require they have a protective court order to continue working.

The attorney general's office says the agreement affects 18 stores in New York and follows a complaint that the company discriminated against an employee in suburban Buffalo.

The woman informed her manager of death threats from her estranged husband, saying she filed a police report and was seeking an order of protection. She was sent home early and told to stay there until she received the order.

According to the attorney general, Bon-Ton will contribute $5,000 to the Erie County Sheriff's Department's Domestic Violence Unit.

A spokesman says the company doesn't comment on litigation.
