610 South University, shown above in 1906, with its distinctive ornate latticework trim on the front porch, was built by builder John T. Hidey, inset, in 1884 upon his arrival in Mt. Pleasant. The feature became a hallmark of residences built by Hidey. As a builder, Hidey was to make his mark on Mt. Pleasant as the builder of practically all of the initial buildings on the Mt. Pleasant Industrial School grounds, the Commercial Block at the northwest corner of Main and Broadway, and the Exchange Bank building at the southeast corner of Main and Broadway. Additionally, Hidey was the contractor/builder for the residences of Dr. Richmond and H. E. Chatterton early in his career. Hidey, who died in 1941 at 84 years old, was preceded in death by his wife Anna in 1938. Together they raised sons Robert and Ralph here. Current city directories show no members of the Hidey family in the area. Subsequent owners include attorney Ray D. Markel, handyman Harry F Chamberlain and his wife Bertha. Since 1959, ownership has resided with members of the Harry F. Chamberlain family and descendants.
