Tech Five: More Apple TV rumors surface

news

Next Wednesday, Apple hosts its annual September event in San Francisco, where they're expected to reveal the next iPhone as well as a new version of its Apple TV set-top box. This means rumors of both devices -- Apple TV in particular -- have been ramping up.

Baig -- Apple TV -- The sleek new Apple TV has been completely retuned for your entertainment. It?s 80 percent smaller than the previous generation ? even with a built-in power supply. Which makes it perfect for sitting neatly on a widescreen TV stand or squeezing into a crowded media cabinet. Not only does the new Apple TV have an amazingly small footprint, it?s also incredibly energy efficient. It stays cool without a fan, so it?s never noisy. And when it?s not filling your living room with drama, romance, and comedy, it uses less power than a night-light. The cost: $99. [Via MerlinFTP Drop]

Let's look at the tech stocks to watch Thursday:

Apple. Let's start with the Apple TV, where 9to5Mac reports it will be slightly larger than current models, carry up to 16 GB of storage and run on the company's latest A8 processing chip. Ports will remain the same, but Apple TV won't support 4K. Meanwhile, Buzzfeed reports Apple TV will boast universal search, allowing users to search for a movie title or TV show and find results across multiple apps. Apple's event takes place in San Francisco on September 9.

Google. Fresh off its logo change, the tech giant is also planning a big smartphone reveal in September. According to Cnet, Google will unveil a pair of Nexus smartphones -- one manufactured by LG and another made by Huawei. The devices will reportedly be the first to run Android 6.0, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.

Netflix. Shares in the streaming giant are down another 2.3% in pre-market trading, part of a difficult week on Wall Street for the company. Netflix closed Friday at $117.63, but has since dipped to the $105 mark over the last several trading sessions. Multiple announcements from competitors have contributed to the slide, including Amazon's addition of free video downloads for users on Android and iOS, as well as rival Hulu offering an ad-free version of its subscription service.

Twitter. The social network's board is expected to meet Thursday to discuss the search for a new CEO, reports Bloomberg. In June, Twitter announced Dick Costolo would step down from the top role. Co-founder Jack Dorsey has served as interim CEO since July 1.

Verizon. Company-owned AOL announced it will acquire ad company Millennial Media for $1.75 a share of common stock. The company specializes in programmatic advertising, which uses a computer-automated process for buying and selling ads.
