Control Nest through ADT app in first-ever security-smart home team up

Home security provider ADT Corp. has no intention of becoming a technological dinosaur, layering more automated services geared towards smart homes in recent years. The latest development in modernizing ADT is the official launch of a team up with widely popular smart thermostat maker Nest Labs, Inc.

The partnership entails the integration of the Nest Learning Thermostat to ADT’s system. This will allow ADT customers to control the smart thermostat with the updated ADT Pulse app, delivering what the duo call a more seamless smart home experience.

Such app integration means fewer points of friction for smart home owners, making ADT a hub to control services outside its own. Towards Nest’s strategy, the thermostat-maker is creating an ecosystem around its data, plugging its services into as many major hubs as possible.

ADT also announced that its customers in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver and Miami may be eligible to receive a Nest Thermostat when they sign up for select Pulse service plans.

This is the first such commercial partnership and integration by a North American home security and automation provider, and is expected to roll out nationwide by the end of the year.

The ADT-Nest partnership was first rumored back in December 2014 when Forbes reported that the two companies are in early talks for a potential partnership. In May 2015, ADT officially announced the partnership with Nest and LG Electronics Inc. that would result in better smart home solutions.

Pulse update

Aside from the Nest integration, the updated Pulse app also got a handful of new upgrades, though few details have so far been offered. One new feature is the “Always On” Dashboard to provide a snapshot of ongoing activity within your home and business, as well as the ability to control compatible devices related to ADT’s home automation platform.

Other upgrades include support for voice commands and the Customized Visual Experience, which presumably delivers a bevy of colorful charts broken down by demographics.
