Registering all the scoring it needed in the first inning with a four-run rally, the National squad rolled to a 9-3 victory over the American squad in the Greater Middlesex Conference Baseball Coaches Association Underclassmen Showcase at North Brunswick’s Community Park on Saturday.

Christian Biolsi of Edison went 2-for-2 with a home run, while teammates Seb Mueller of St. Joseph and Jarrett May of Middlesex each delivered RBI singles. The trio was among 12 different National players to register hits.

Rob Nunez of Woodbridge hurled two scoreless innings for the National squad, while teammates Adam Boucher (St. Joseph), Evan Scarduffa (Spotswood), Matt Vento (Spotswood) and Gavin Abrams (Metuchen) each hurled a scoreless frame.

The American squad cut the 4-0 deficit in half in the bottom of the first. Christian Petrillo walked, stole second and scored on Rob Gonzalez’s single to left-center. Gonzalez (South Plainfield) stole second and scored on Victor Caraballo’s clutch two-out, two-strike single. Caraballo plays for Perth Amboy Tech.

South Plainfield’s Chris Shine struck out three and walked one in his one inning of work for the American squad. Gonzalez also fanned the side during his frame on the hill. Teammate Jacob Ciccone of South Brunswick pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Trailing 6-3 in the fifth, Bishop Ahr’s Kyle Orta belted a solo home run for the American squad.

Immediately following the conclusion of the Underclassmen Showcase, Lou Truppa of J.F. Kennedy led the North to an 8-3 victory over the South in the 28th annual GMCBCA Frank Gavigan Senior All-Star Game.

Truppa had a sacrifice fly and an RBI double in the seventh inning when the North rallied for six runs to erase a 3-2 deficit.

Mike Medvetz of Woodbridge and Matt Peterson of Piscataway each had an RBI single during the rally.

St. Joseph ace Kyle Subers started the game for the North and hurled two scoreless innings.

The South was limited to two hits, a first-inning single from Perth Amboy’s Chris Brito and a second-inning double from Sayreville's Bryan Fernandez. The South scored two runs without the benefit of a hit in the sixth inning. Spotswood’s Mike Izzo had a sacrifice fly.

Monroe’s Vinnie Abene Jr. pitched one inning for the South. He struck out three and allowed an unearned run. Abene needed to retire four batters because the run scored on a swinging third strike that eluded his catcher, who made an errant throw to first.
