BYRON TOWNSHIP, MI -- SpartanNash has decided to remodel its longtime Grand Haven store instead of building a new store on the site of a bowling alley.

The Grand Rapids-area grocer announced this month it has signed a new long-term lease and is moving ahead with a multi-million dollar remodel of the D&W Fresh Market location at 1116 Robbins Road.

The Byron Township headquartered company had investigated building a new store at the site of the Starlite Lanes, at 1305 South Beacon Blvd. But SpartanNash concluded a remodel of the current location was the best option for the community and its environmental goals, the company said in a statement.

The extensive remodel is scheduled for 2016 and will include major interior and department upgrades along with a new exterior facade and repaved parking lot with LED lighting.

This means Starlite Lanes, which announced its closure earlier this summer, will remain open. The business is currently taking signups for fall leagues.

David VanderHoek, owner of Starlite Lanes, didn't immediately respond to a call from MLive seeking comment.
