Summer for Decatur County students ends in less than a week, and multiple organizations are holding school supply drives. 

Bainbridge Public Safety is hosting a drive through the month of August and will work with the Friendship House of Jesus to get the supplies to students.

“A lot of the kids who we were dealing with on our fishing trips and other activities with the Friendship House said that they were having trouble getting school supplies, so we thought this would be a way to help them out,” said BPS Cpt. David Cutchin.

Cutchin said that BPS is accepting any items that can be found on the local schools’ supply lists like hand sanitizer, Kleenex and standard supplies like notebooks and pens.

BPS has a collection bin in its main office on Louise Street.

The Bainbridge-Decatur County YMCA hosted a “back to school brigade” Friday afternoon with items donated by Dollar Tree.

The items were paid for by Dollar Tree patrons, and cashiers held an internal competition to see who could sell the most.

The Y will continue to offer the school supplies to members until school begins or until they run out of donated items.

“This is really generous and helpful for busy parents on a budget,” said Margo Brenton, who took advantage of the supplies while picking up her son.

The Remaining Few Motorcycle Club is also hosting a school supply drive for underprivileged families and students Saturday, Aug. 1.
