Brain-dead woman saves 4 other lives
Four Mumbaikars received a new lease of life after they received organs donated by a 45-year-old woman, who was hit by a train and succumbed to injuries, on Thursday morning. The woman, Mankhurd resident Shobha Chavan, was crossing the track between Sanpada and Vashi railway stations, when she was hit by a local train on Wednesday.

According to sources, doctors were able to convince her husband, Tukaram Chavan, to donate the organs as he was already familiar with the plight of patients diagnosed with renal, liver and cardiac problems, and was moved by it.

The hospital management initiated the process for Cadaver Organ Transplant Programme and managed to harvest her heart, kidneys and liver. While one of the kidneys was sent to Jaslok Hospital, the other was sent to MGM hospital in Vashi. There were patients waiting for the transplant in both the hospitals. Shobha’s liver was sent for a transplant at Wockhardt hospital and the heart was rushed to Fortis Hospital in Mulund.

A green corridor was created around 7:30 am on Thursday to ensure that the organs were safely transported to the hospitals in order to save time.
