The black arts: Burger King unveils Halloween Whopper

Daniel Higgins
The (Appleton, Wis.) Post Crescent

The black bun of the Burger King A.1. Halloween Whopper got me to bite, even though I should be above being sucked in by such gimmicks. The last fast-food chain offering to entice me was Hardee's Most American Burger, but I tried that more on a dare from a co-worker than out of curiosity.

If you've had a Whopper and A.1. sauce, imagine them together and you have the taste of Burger King's A.1. Halloween Whopper.

Before getting to the burger, the former graphic artist in me stopped to admire the wrapper.

Have to admit, I like the wrapper design.

FIRST BITE:

The burger is a Whopper with A.1. Steak Sauce. If you've had both, imagine them together and you've got the taste — you don't need me, or anyone else, to pontificate on the flavor.

Burger King says the A.1. flavor is baked into the bun. I tasted the bun apart from the whole sandwich and didn't get A.1. sauce flavor. There is an A.1. Thick and Hearty Sauce on the sandwich. My daughter, who assisted with the tasting, said the same of hers.

SECOND HELPING: Whenever I try something out of the ordinary, I'm glad to have tried it for no other reason than to say: "Yeah, I ate that once." With that said, this will be my only A.1. Halloween Whopper of the season.

Is there a food that has you curious about its flavor? Send me a note, maybe I'll give it a taste.
