Rays prospects and minor leagues: O'Conner returns to diamond

A back injury prevented Justin O'Conner from playing until his Tuesday appearance in the Gulf Coast League, so it's not a totally lost season. Off the backfields of the GCL, Desmond Jennings, Brad Boxberger and Grayson Garvin all appeared for the Stone Crabs.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (47-58)

Daniel Robertson's 14th-inning single gave Durham a marathon 5-4 win over Toledo. Scoring the winning run was Jaff Decker, whose three-run home run with two outs in the ninth was the reason the teams went to extra innings. Justin Marks exited after seven innings having allowed two runs, and the Mud Hens were able to add two insurance runs off Ryne Stanek, who allowed four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (19-12)

An effective Taylor Guerrieri plus a pair of two-run homers led Montgomery to a 10-5 win over Pensacola. The Biscuits were already up 1-0 when Justin Williams' third Double-A home run plated two, and Willy Adames set a career-high with his ninth dinger as the Biscuits gradually built a 10-1 lead. Before Mark Sappington was charged with four runs, Guerrieri dominated the Blue Wahoos, allowing just an unearned run over six frames with five strikeouts.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (16-14)

Jupiter broke a deadlock late in Charlotte's 3-1 loss Tuesday. After Brad Boxberger got out of a jam in the first inning another rehabber, Grayson Garvin, took his place. He allowed a solo home run, but Thomas Milone evened the game with a homer of his own a half inning later. Garvin struck out four in five one-run innings before handing the baton off to actual Stone Crab Jeff Howell, who allowed two later Hammerheads runs that decided the game. Yet another rehabber, Desmond Jennings, acted as Charlotte's DH batting leadoff and went 1-for-4.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (18-12)

Bowling Green was off.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (22-16)

A pair of run-scoring doubles lifted Hudson Valley to a 4-1 win in Game 1 against Aberdeen. Just a half inning after the IronBirds evened the score at one, the Renegades used RBI doubles from Jim Haley and Angel Perez, as well as a wild pitch, to score three runs. Starter Adrian Navas struck out six and allowed a run in 5 2/3 innings, and Joe Serrapica recorded the final four outs.

Hudson Valley pitching continued to dominate in a 1-0 shutout win in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Landon Cray tripled in the only run of the game in the second inning, and that would be all a pair of Renegades arms needed. Starter Eduardo Rosillo struck out six and yielded just four hits in six scoreless innings, and Jose Alonzo wrapped up the game with a 1-2-3 seventh.

Rookie Princeton Rays (19-12)

Adrian Rondon continued to punish Appy League pitchers in Princeton's 7-4 win over Greeneville. With a run already in on Emilio Gustave's RBI single, Rondon's sixth homer of the season, a three-run blast, extended Princeton's lead to 4-0 before Greeneville even batted. Princeton was able to add insurance with a run in each of the fourth through sixth innings. Starter Ethan Clark struck out eight and allowed three runs -- two earned -- in 5 1/3 innings.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (13-15)

A 3-0 lead was not enough in the GCL Rays' 5-3 loss to the GCL Red Sox. Jesus Sanchez drove in the first round with a first-inning groundout, and the last out of the inning was welcome news for the Rays -- Justin O'Conner flied out in his first game of the season. He would finish 0-for-2 and exit the game after catching five innings. Easton McGee struck out five in 3 1/3 innings, but the GCL Red Sox made the comeback against Anthony Parente and Kevin Williams.
