Washington CNN  —

Alexandria shooting victim Matt Mika was discharged from George Washington University Hospital on Friday after being shot several times last week, according to a statement from his family.

Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and former congressional aide, was shot when a lone gunman opened fire on the Republican congressional baseball team’s practice on June 14. Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, congressional aide Zach Barth and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were also shot in the early morning ambush, and Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were injured.

“We are truly grateful for the compassionate, world-class care provided by the doctors, nurses and team at George Washington,” Mika’s family said in a statement. “And we will never forget and continue to be grateful for the heroism shown by the US Capitol Police. We truly appreciate the prayers, words of encouragement and support from Matt’s friends, family and people across the nation and the world.”

Mika’s discharge is a “welcome and important step” to his recovery, his family added.

On Thursday, Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth stopped by the hospital to visit Mika and took a photo with him.

The Congressional Baseball Game was played June 15 at Nationals Park.
