STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former New Dorp resident Joseph G. Filosa, 49, of Freehold, N.J., a geologist, who was a dedicated volunteer and family man, died Thursday in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton, N.J.

Mr. Filosa was born and raised in New Dorp. After he and the former Christine Amisano wed in 1993, the couple relocated to Freehold.

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in geology from the City College of New York, Manhattan.

He worked at CB & I Environmental Infrastructure (Chicago Bridge & Iron Company) as a geologist for more than 20 years, and was a member of the Geological Society, and the Planetary Society.

He loved helping others, and volunteered at the Boy Scouts and at the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Pt. Pleasant, where he was a member and past commander.

He enjoyed boating, fishing and listening to classic rock music.

He was a loyal friend who treasured being with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Christine; his son, Matthew; his daughter, Allison Filosa; his mother, Marilyn Filosa; his sisters, Janet and Joan Filosa, Judy Hunt and Jeanne Wynne.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township. Arrangements include cremation.
