RBC Canadian Open experts' picks

Vijay Singh will be well-rested for the RBC Canadian Open since he skipped the extended Open in Scotland. Will that translate to success this weekend? AP Photo/Stew Milne

The RBC Canadian Open offers a much different challenge from the Old Course at St. Andrews. The short track offers an opportunity for good ball strikers to compete with long hitters. Who will shake off the jet lag and rise to the top at Glen Abbey? Our experts weigh in.

Matt Barrie, SportsCenter anchor

Pat Perez: The week after a major is always tough. Add in the extra day because of weather, international travel and general letdown of major competition, and it makes it harder. That is why I'm going with Arizona State's Pat Perez this week. Perez didn't play in The Open, which hopefully mean he's fresh. Adding to that, he's made nine straight cuts and found himself in the top 25 six times during that span. It makes me a believer that the Sun Devil will take advantage of everyone else's Scotland fatigue.

Jonathan Coachman, SportsCenter anchor

Graham Delaet: I am done picking guys who did well in majors the week before and then travel to play the next week. It's time to get serious about the FedExCup, and Delaet needs to climb the ladder. He is also motivated when he plays in Canada, where he is from. At this point, I need a win.

Michael Collins, ESPN.com senior golf analyst

Vijay Singh: Did you know Vijay Singh, at 52 years old, is inside the FedExCup Playoff numbers? Yep, and he's played 18 events this year on the big-boy tour. Did I mention he ranks second all-time in total money earned at the RBC Canadian Open? Now think about how tired all the guys from The Open are going to be and how fresh Vijay will be thanks to his week off.

Bob Harig, ESPN.com senior golf writer

Scott Piercy: Why not go with the hot hand? Piercy is coming off a victory at the Barbasol Championship and had a much easier commute to Toronto than all the players who had to wait a day to make the journey on a charter from The Open. It doesn't hurt that Piercy has been trending nicely of late, as he tied for 14th the week prior at the John Deere Classic. The hope here is that Piercy continues his nice run.

Kevin Maguire, ESPN.com senior golf editor

Willie McGirt: Since The Open became such a physical and mental grind last week at St. Andrews, there was no way I was picking anyone who played in Scotland. So after winnowing the field that way, and taking into account that Glen Abbey last hosted the RBC Canadian Open in 2013 when McGirt finished tied for second, his first PGA Tour victory just might come north of the border.

Jason Sobel, ESPN.com senior golf writer

Ollie Schneiderjans: Fresh off an impressive march up the leaderboard at St. Andrews in his final amateur appearance that ended with a tie for 12th, the newly minted pro will lose a day of prep work this week, but that will be offset by momentum and -- just in case you couldn't tell during that final-round 67 -- plenty of talent.

John Ziomek, SportsCenter coordinating producer

Will Wilcox: If you want to catch Harig, you have to take a few risks. We both had Adam Scott last week, but I'm betting he isn't taking Will Wilcox this week. I'm looking for Wilcox to build on the momentum he built with a second-place finish at the Barbasol Championship and a tie for eighth at the John Deere. With Zach Johnson taking the week off and Barbasol winner Scott Piercy notwithstanding, perhaps no one comes in on a bigger high than Wilcox. He capped his round in Alabama with back-to-back birdies, including a 60-foot bomb on the 18th green, virtually assuring he will secure his PGA Tour card for next season. A win this week for the former pizza delivery guy would be one of the better stories of the season.

Earlier this year, Chris Morfas commented on the Valspar Championship picks article and noted that accountability is rare these days. So in an effort at transparency, we will be updating the list below with each week's picks. Good idea, Chris.
