Lyon County manager addresses flood reduction strategy to commissioners
Lyon County Manager Jeff Page recently announced to the Board of Commissioners his recommendations to reduce the effects of flash flooding and river flooding in Central Lyon County.
He explained at the Feb. 16 meeting that he proposes to bring the following items to the Board of Commissioners in the next few months:
— The creation of a flood control district from the Carson City line to the Churchill County line through the Central Lyon County corridor. This district will have a set tax rate to be used specifically for the construction, repair and maintenance of drainages and flood reduction programs.
— Develop an ordinance to address road side drainages to address the installation, maintenance and removal of said drainages and culverts.
— Develop an ordinance to require sellers of property to notify prospective buyers that the property is prone to flash flooding.
— Review and revise existing land use ordinances to require developers to establish drainage systems in accordance with the requirements of the County and flood control district.
Page explained these are not popular issues but the county needs to cease "kicking the can down the road" and start addressing the issue. If the county continues doing what we have been doing then the county will continue repairing the same flood damaged infrastructure.
