The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) has confirmed that one person has died in a head-on vehicular incident near Lamar on Highway 287 Aug. 25. The office has not released the name of the victim.

Highway 287 was closed in both directions at about noon at mile post 63 and reopened at approximately 2 p.m.

CSP Public Affairs Trooper Nate Reid told the Ledger that a southbound Ford Mustang, for an unknown reason, crossed over into the northbound lane. A northbound United Parcel Service (UPS ) semi pulling two trailers attempted to avoid the collision by veering to the right. The Ford struck the left side of the semi, near the saddle (gas) tank. After striking the semi, the Ford rotated off the west side of the road.

The driver of the Ford, a 67 year old male from Illinois, died after being transported to the Prowers County Medical Center. He was alone in the Ford.

The driver of the semi, a 57 year old male from Colorado, was uninjured.

The accident continues to be investigated.
