Katrice Hardy has been named executive editor of The Greenville News and Southeast regional editor for the USA Today Network, Gannett Co. Inc. officials announced on Friday.

Gannett’s Southeast region includes The Greenville News, as well as the Independent-Mail in Anderson, the Citizen-Times in Asheville and The News Leader in Staunton, Virginia.

"I’m very excited to have had the opportunity to recruit someone of Katrice’s caliber,” said Tom Claybaugh, president and publisher of The Greenville News and the Citizen-Times.

Hardy will be based in Greenville and is scheduled to begin work Sept. 12.

"I am so excited about joining the staff and relocating to Greenville,” Hardy said. "I am also eager to help The Greenville News continue its robust local news coverage and will enjoy improving our digital report and platforms."

Hardy previously served as managing editor of The Virginian-Pilot based in Norfolk, Virginia, where she has worked for almost 21 years. During her time in Norfolk, Hardy has served roles on the watchdog and enterprise beats, as well as metro editing positions.

She served on a team at the newspaper that created the Evening Pilot, a magazine-style tablet app.

Under her leadership, the newspaper has won myriad honors, including state FOIA and Virginia Press Association awards. Other recognition came from the Mayborn Literacy Nonfiction Writers Conference and the national Education Writer's Association.

Hardy is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a graduate of Louisiana State University; and a fan of the New Orleans Saints football team.
